Old painting of the Sussex Pad Due to its lonely position by the river, the original Sussex Pad was a favourite haunt to smugglers who found its cellars a convenient place to store contraband.
Travellers would rest here before taking the "Duke of Norfolk ferry" across the river to Shoreham. The old toll bridge In 1782 the ferry was replaced by a toll bridge, built by redundant Welsh miners. The bridge carried traffic over the river until 1968 which, although no longer open to traffic, can still be crossed on foot today.
Sadly the original Sussex Pad, which dated back to the fifteenth century, was destroyed by fire in 1905. |
